About the Burn Injury Model System

The Boston-Harvard Burn Injury Model System is one of four sites that has been awarded a national grant for research for the 2012-2017. The grant is funded by the National Institute of Disability and Rehabilitation Research (NIDRR), a component of the Department of Education - Office of Special Education and Rehabilitative Services (OSERS). The main mission of NIDRR is to help improve the lives of individuals with disabilities.

We work in collaboration with Brigham and Women's HospitalMassachusetts General Hospital, Shriners Hospital for Children - Boston, and Spaulding Rehabiliation Hospital.

Program Director, Boston-Harvard BIMS

Dr. Schneider is an Associate Professor of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at Harvard Medical School/Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital and Medical Director of the Burn and Trauma Program at Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital. Dr. Schneider is a rehabilitation medicine specialist and national expert in burn injury rehabilitation. He is also Director of the Burn Rehabilitation Outcomes Group that has developed wide-ranging collaborations, produced numerous national presentations and articles, and demonstrated a strong history of grant support.

Dr. Colleen M. Ryan, MD

Director of Clinical Care, Boston-Harvard BIMS

Dr. Colleen M. Ryan, MD, is an Associate Professor of Surgery at Harvard Medical School and physician at the Fraser Outpatient Burn Services at Massachusetts General Hospital and Shriners Hospital for Children Boston. Dr. Ryan is a trauma surgeon and a national figure in the area of burn injury outcomes.

Felipe Fregni (MD, PhD, MPH), is the Director of the Laboratory of Neuromodulation at Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital, Harvard Medical School, as well as an Associate Professor of Neurology and Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at Harvard Medical School, Boston, MA, USA. He is also the course director for the HMS continuing medical education course, Principles and Practice of Clinical Research, a 6-month distance learning course. It focuses on promoting collaboration and bringing clinical research education to practicing clinicians worldwide.

Dr. Tompkins is the director of the Division of Surgery, Science and Bioengineering and the former Chief of the Burns Service at the Massachusetts General Hopsital, Chief of Staff Emeritus at Shriners Hospitals for Children, Boston, and Sumner M. Redstone Professor of Surgery at Harvard Medical School. 

He is a national leader in burn research and outcomes as well as past-president of the American Burn Association and International Society of Burn Injury.
