Patient Care

altBoston-Harvard Burn Injury Model System (BH-BIMS) is a partnership of Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH), Shriners Hospitals for Children – Boston (Shriners), Spaulding Rehabilitation Network (SRN), Brigham and Women's Hospital (BWH) and Harvard Medical School (HMS). Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital (SRH) is part of the Partners Healthcare System (Partners) and is the flagship facility of SRN. Partners include MGH, BWH and SRH, three major teaching institutions of Harvard. Shriners is an international leader in the field of pediatric burn care and research.

The mission of the burn programs at Shriners, MGH, BWH and SRH is to promote excellence in patient care, education, and research. BH-BIMS spans across the continuum of care, from prevention programs and emergency services to outpatient care, with a special focus on burn reconstruction, psychiatric follow-up, community reintegration, and vocational rehabilitation.

BH-BIMS has over 8,200 outpatient burn injury clinic visits each year. Our systematic program of outpatient care devoted to persons with burn injury is guided by the following principles:

• Patient-centered care
• Complication prevention
• Dynamic communication through use of our longitudinal electronic medical record
• Facilitation of burn injury specific medical care and preventative health services

Brigham and Women's Hospital

Brigham and Women’s Hospital is verified as a Burn Center by the American Burn Association and American College of Surgeons.                                  The Burn Center, one of the few burn centers nationwide led by plastic surgeons, provides treatment and follow-up for patients with minor                to severe burns, as well as those who have suffered from burn injury and seek a better functional and aesthetic outcome.  Burn and plastic                surgeons  work closely with a strong, multi-disciplinary team including occupational therapists, physical therapists, dietitians, social                            workers, and skilled  wound care staff.

The Massachusetts General Hospital Burn Service

Massachusetts General Hospital is home to one of the few Level 1 Verified Adult Burn Centers in New England. Our critical care intensivists provide 24-hour burn care coverage and lead an experienced and compassionate staff that is skilled in critical care medicine and nursing. The outpatient Burn Clinic, located on the same floor of the hospital as the inpatient unit, allows us to provide burn treatment to adult burn patients along the entire continuum of care.

Shriners Hospital for Children - Boston Burn Care

Shriners Hospitals for Children® has been a pioneer in burn care since we first started treating burn survivors in the 1960s. In fact, some of the most significant advancements in burn care – such as skin grafting and the development of engineered skin – were first made right here at Shriners Hospitals for Children. Our patients receive advanced care for burn injuries and related scarring, along with physical rehabilitation and emotional support to help them cope with re-entering their school or community after their injury.
